Turning Waste into Clean Energy
In Coastal Kenya, reliance on wood and charcoal for cooking drives deforestation of precious mangrove ecosystems. This leads to soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and contributes to climate change. Indoor air pollution from wood smoke also poses serious health risks, particularly to women and children.
We train local youth to collect agricultural waste (like sawdust and coconut husks) and transform it into clean-burning, affordable fuel briquettes. This provides a sustainable alternative to charcoal that burns longer, produces less smoke, and protects our environment.
Environmental: Reduces pressure on mangrove forests and diverts waste from landfills.

Sustaining Ecosystems, Sweetening Livelihoods
Pollinator populations are declining globally, threatening food security and biodiversity. At the same time, many communities lack sustainable, year-round income sources, leading to economic instability and pressure to engage in environmentally harmful practices.
We establish and maintain sustainable apiaries in the coastal forests of Kwale. Our beekeepers are trained in modern, ethical beekeeping practices that support bee populations and produce pure, high-quality coastal honey.
Environmental: Promotes pollination of local crops and native flora, enhancing biodiversity.
Economic: Creates a sustainable income stream through the sale of raw honey and other bee products.
Social: Beekeeping provides a viable livelihood that can be inclusive of persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups.
Educational: Proceeds from honey sales add to our girls’ education fund.

From Orchard Waste to Artisanal Treasure
Coastal Kenya produces abundant coconuts and mangoes, but post-harvest losses are significant. Valuable biomass like coconut husks is often treated as waste, while farmers struggle with low and unstable incomes for their produce.
We’ve established a vibrant value-addition workshop where youth transform this “waste” into high-value, marketable products:
Coconut Coir Mats & Baskets: Woven from coconut husks, providing sustainable home goods.
Dried Mangoes: Preserving the harvest to reduce waste and create a delicious, nutritious snack.
Coconut Oil: Cold-pressed for culinary and cosmetic use.
