I used to see coconut husks as trash. Now I see them as opportunity.
Jamal Ali, 24, from Ukunda, never imagined he’d be running his own eco-business. After completing secondary school, he faced the familiar struggle of limited job opportunities in Kwale County.
I was helping my family with our small coconut farm, but we were throwing away the husks. It felt wasteful, but I didn’t know what else to do,’ Jamal recalls. Everything changed when he joined Green Flame Impact’s entrepreneurship program. He received hands-on training in coconut coir production and business management. The training opened my eyes. I learned that what we considered waste could become valuable products. They didn’t just teach me how to make mats; they taught me how to build a business.’
Today, Jamal runs a thriving small enterprise employing three other young people. They transform coconut waste into beautiful, durable coir mats that are sold in markets across the Coast region.
‘Now I’m not just making a living—I’m protecting our environment and creating jobs for others. The best part? Knowing that the proceeds from our work are helping girls in my community get the education I was lucky to have.’
Without this scholarship, I would be married now instead of studying science
Amina Hassan, 17, from Matuga, always dreamed of becoming a doctor. But when her father passed away, her family struggled to pay school fees. ‘My uncles said I should forget school and prepare for marriage. I cried every night,’ she shares.
Amina’s life transformed when she received a Green Flame Impact scholarship. ‘When they told me I could continue school, I couldn’t believe it. I promised myself I would study hard and make them proud.’
Now in her final year of secondary school, Amina is top of her class in science subjects. ‘The scholarship covers everything—fees, books, even the uniform. And I have a mentor who guides me and believes in my dreams.’
Amina understands the unique connection between her education and the green ventures that fund it. ‘I’ve visited the briquette workshop and seen how they’re protecting our environment. It inspires me to think about how I can combine medicine with environmental health when I become a doctor.’
