Our story is woven from the very fabric of the Kenyan coast—from the vibrant streets of Mombasa to the lush, fertile lands of Kwale County. Here, we witnessed a powerful contrast: the breathtaking beauty of our shores and coral reefs alongside the pressing challenges of environmental waste and youth unemployment. We saw the potential of our young people brimming with energy, and the brilliance of our girls, too often sidelined from education and opportunity.
The question that ignited our journey was born from this soil and sea: What if the very challenges of our coast could become the source of its renewal?
In Kwale, we saw coconut husks and mango waste piling up, seen as refuse, while the demand for wood fuel led to the cutting of precious mangroves. We met young people, full of ideas, looking for work in a limited economy. And we knew that when a girl’s education is cut short, our entire community loses a future leader, a teacher, or an innovator.
Our moment of ignition came from looking at our coastal resources with new eyes.
What if we could train the youth of Ukunda and Msambweni to transform coconut waste into durable coir mats and briquettes, protecting our mangroves? What if the mangoes that sometimes go to waste in Kinango could be preserved and valued, creating new income? What if beekeeping in the coastal forests could help pollinate our crops and produce pure, coastal honey?
And most importantly: What if the proceeds from these uniquely coastal, green ventures could fund the education of a girl in Matuga or Lunga Lunga, ensuring her potential is never washed away?
This was the birth of Green Flame Impact right here, in the heart of the coast. The “Green” is for the mangroves we protect and the sustainable livelihoods we build. The “Flame” is the energy of our coastal youth and the warmth of our community spirit. The “Impact” is the resilient future we are co-creating, from the Diani beaches to the Shimoni hinterlands.
We started with a single, smoky kiln for briquettes in Kwale, learning by doing. Our first venture in coconut value-addition was a small workshop, but it proved our model worked. The young people involved weren’t just earning a living; they were becoming guardians of their environment. And with the first proceeds, we supported our first girl from the coast through secondary school, watching as her confidence grew with her grades.
Today, that initial coastal spark has become a steady fire. We are a growing movement where protecting the coastal environment fuels educational opportunity, and educating girls builds a generation of leaders who will steward this land. We are proving that a clean, circular economy is not just a concept—it’s the most practical path forward for Kwale County and the entire coast.
Our story is still being written with every coconut husk woven into a mat, every clean-burning briquette made, every hive placed in a coastal forest, and every girl we help to walk confidently into her classroom and her future.
This is our home. This is our future. Join us in protecting and empowering it.
A clean, circular, and inclusive Kenya where young people and communities co-create climate-smart solutions for a green and thriving future for all.
We actively create spaces where everyone, especially women, youth, and persons with disabilities, has a seat at the table. We go beyond invitation to ensure full participation, designing our programs and workplaces for accessibility and equal opportunity. Our focus on educating girls is a direct commitment to redressing gender inequality.
We are driven by meaningful results宰, not just activity. In every briquette we produce and every girl we support, we strive for excellence. We measure our success not by our efforts, but by the tangible, positive change we create in our communities and environment.
We hold ourselves to the highest standards of honesty and transparency. We are accountable to our community members, our partners, and our donors. The trust they place in us is the foundation of our work, and we ensure that every resource is stewarded responsibly towards our shared mission.
We believe the challenges we face require fresh, context-specific solutions. We empower our youth to be creative problem-solvers, turning local waste into valuable resources and designing new, climate-smart ventures. We continuously learn, adapt, and pioneer new approaches for greater impact.
